A study reported that almost 10-17% of patients with type 2 diabetes and newly diagnosed chronic kidney disease (CKD) experienced worsening of their conditions within 2 years. This raises the need for early identification of patients at risk for rapidly progressive CKD.

In the study, a cohort of eGFR-based individuals (n=65731) and a UACR-based cohort of 23035 individuals were assessed for CKD progression. The results showed that patients with eGFR values had an increased prevalence of most comorbidities, more use of cardiovascular medications, and reduced use of glucose-lowering agents compared to those with UACR values.

After a follow-up of a median duration of 1.3 years, it was seen that 50% to 64% of patients with type 2 diabetes and CKD showed no disease progression. These results have indicated that the prompt detection of these patients is significant to know about a susceptible population with the potentially unmet therapeutic requirement.
